I’ve already posted several of the full works that feature here (my favourite performances, not abridged as in the films and in modern sound), so if you fancy exploring further here are a few to be going on with. I’ll update with more periodically, and contributions are welcome.

An amazing Fantasia sequence that was developed but ultimately left out. Nevertheless Sibelius' music with Kay Nielsen's storyboards is a gorgeous combination and stands up to the film's finished sequences (in some cases bettering them). Check it out. Full recording of Sibelius' 'Legends' above.

Oh wow, I didn't realize it was Chicago in Fantasia 2000. Grabbed this one, thanks.

I have a recording of Pictures at an Exhibition with Valery Gergiev and the Vienna Philharmonic that I have always disregarded because the Tenor Tuba solo in Bydlo is so horribly played--It's just out of tune and not very good (when you play Euphonium, Pictures is all about bydlo.) I have one with Eugene Ormandy and Philadelphia that I like. Anyway, listening to the rest of it now, the rest of it isn't as bad as I thought, so I'm ready to give Mr. Gergiev another shot. I'll try this and definitely the "Stokowski's Mussorgsky" you put up.

Thanks a bunch, Lens!

A few notes about the above:

- The Bach transcriptions were recorded in the late 50s/60s, so don't be perturbed by a touch of discreet, natural hiss - they're sumptuous.
- Rhapsody in Blue is the expanded arrangement for two pianos (and a big orchestra!) by Ferde Grofe. I think it's a fantastic swaggering performance and the recorded sound is stunning. The pianists are Katia and Marielle Labèque.
An American in Paris is also a big favourite of mine. I can never get enough of that slinky bluesy melody in the central section. Just try to keep still at the electric explosion at 13:40!
- I was going to rip my own copy of the Shostakovich concertos with Dmitri Alexeev, but I found this one and I'm very impressed. Bernstein himself at the piano in No.2 and he absolutely nails it. Great clarity too. Also you get a good version of the first Cello Concerto thrown in to the bargain.

Gergiev isn't always on the mark, but he really is in the Nutcracker and Rite of Spring. I think he goes for overall impact and effect, occasionally at the expense of careful phrasing, and his recordings often derive from live concerts, so that can account for the odd hiccup (there are several in the Rite, but it scarcely matters!).

Hey, I hadn't ever heard Scriabin's "Poem of Ecstasy" that was on that Valery Gergiev recording of the Rite of Spring. I've listened to it twice now, and its incredible. I like it more each time. Thanks! Oh, I also really enjoyed that version of Rite. Thanks again!

Did you catch my post of Scriabin's [Hidden link. Register to see links.] in the classical thread a few weeks back? It's just as gorgeous.
