Red Garden Original Soundtrack (Akira Senju, 2007)

I hinted that I would be uploading this some time ago. I actually own the thing but as I don't have a properly working scanner I'm uploading Nipponsei's version so you guys can stare at nifty scans.

Every instrument is live. You don't get that very often with anime. Akira Senju, who is infamously selective about what anime he composes for (he has composed anime since the early 90s and you can count the amount of series he's done on two hands), arrives with one of his trademark emotional and sympathetic soundscapes, and the soundtrack progresses from a lonely and sad work to something extremely violent and threatening to more serene and peaceful and finally triumph. All along the way the emotion that rules this OST does not abate, even in the signature battle track the violins sound like they are crying and wailing.

At the end of the OST we have five tracks sung by KOKIA, who is perhaps one of five Japanese vocalists whose voice is so powerful that you don't care that you don't know what she is saying. This OST marked a change in style for KOKIA, and started her shift towards the more eerie and sad work she generally does today. Akira Senju still composed and arranged the instrumentals, though.

Red Gardenwas released towards the end of GONZO's "golden age" that started with Full Metal Panic in 2002 and concluded with RomeoXJuliet in 2007, where GONZO typically released above-average and experimental products that, even if controversial (such as the very loose adaptations of Chrono Crusade and Black Cat), gained dedicated audiences on both sides of the Pacific. Red Garden was another series released in this tradition, as it takes place in New York with Americans as the main characters who are generally portrayed sympathetically, a rarity in Japan. It was also animated in a different manner than most anime, where the show was not animated until the voice work and sound mix were completed.

I already had this, but nevertheless I have to thank you for spotlighting this magnificent work, and for giving Akira Senju the respect he deserves. Sadly, it's pretty much a given that few people will hear this score - because it's not J-Pop or Yoko Kanno, and because Red Garden doesn't sell as well as Haruhi.

But folks, you really should listen to this, because it's a masterpiece. Granted, Senju is something of a deity to me (with Yoshihisa Hirano and Michiru Oshima) but this is still magnificent stuff. Music you can really get your teeth into. If you want something straightforward, emotionally overbearing, and loud... this probably isn't for you... But come this way for one of the 21st centuries finest achievements in music - anime or no, this is golden.

Probably one of the most amazing scores I've heard in a long long while. Thanks again for this. I need to look more into Senju! If anyone has other links or has suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it!

NotSpecial: While I think of it, would you consider adding this splendid post to the Orchestral Action Music thread? I think the audience therein may be very receptive to this one...

Thanks for the soundtrack. I haven't seen Red Garden and really don't plan to (I know this sentiment will get me shot, but for a story to take place in New York and still NOT have any black people in it is something I simply cannot watch.)

Since FMA Brotherhood really grew on me, I think it's time to experience some more Senju. Thanks for posting NotSpecial, and for the great review I'll post some comments when I've had a good listen.

I'm going to upload two of Senju's classical works to the classical thread this evening... with a nice little crosspost to the Orchestral thread...

I think these may be of interest, if you in any way enjoyed Red Garden or FMA Brotherhood.

Actually, I didn't even listened to a single score by Senju. Given the elogious comments, I guess this one would be a nice start.

Thanks for posting!
