(My VG music taste is actually very varied. I'm just trying to pick out soundtracks that would sound 'cooler'.)
England huh? Well that's only a plane flight away
I know what you mean by sounding 'Cooler' and I totally agree
you have a nice selection there and the ones you picked are some
that I listen to very often ^__^ I've actually had a few people stop
and ask me what I was listening to because of Jet Set and Tekken.
I love the reactions once they realize it's a video game Ost

(I need to try the Splinter Cell Choas Theory though...)

I'd definitely recommend it. :P The world is much more interesting with the Chaos Theory soundtrack playing. I was playing it last night when walking home for almost an hour. That's what music is about for me - escapism. I just want to feel like I'm somewhere else.

"The world is much more interesting with the Chaos Theory soundtrack playing" <-- I like that I share the same feelings and escapism is the perfect word! Video game music takes me to other places like no other ^_^

I'm stunned to hear this from someone other than myself. Kudos to you!

I will search for the ost tonight baby!

Yer I know what u mean, some of my friends expects me to listen to Hip hop, Rap, RnB & Grime because thats what black people do and thats negative. I use to listen to that kind of music but i don't (that was like 3 or 4 years ago) because its boring, says the same thing with same beat and the videos get worst & worst, i think there turning into porno mini films and the fact is ITS WAK.

I believe that VG music is a breath of fresh air to me, all the mainstream music that i listen to now sucks BIG time e.g. pop, rock, rnb and some dance music (most of them sounds great). The best game music for me has to be the whole tekken series, Unreal tournament series, Incoming, God of war 2 and loads more.

My advice is just ignore them, don't be ashamed be happy with what u listen to because at the end of the day everybody has a freedom of choice.

I completely agree. It's only the more synthesised stuff I automatically turn down now, like the Streets of Rage soundtrack or Phoenix Wright.

    Me!

Anyway, I have no idea why I've never used this forum before - it's the only place I can actually talk to people who enjoy videogame music (well, there's 2 people I know in person who enjoy videogame music, but that's it). The appeal to me is that the styles are so varied (particularly in series' such as Castlevania, Michiru Yamane is a great example of someone who uses different styles of music - ranging from lively rock to a more classical style) - there really is something for everyone. Also a point that appeals to me is the fact that most of it is instrumental (or often when there are vocals they are in a foreign language, like Suteki Da Ne (FFX) is in Japanese, and A Deus (Grandia 2)) so the music escapes my main complaint of modern music which is the cliches of the lyrics, which to me make lots of modern rock music, etc, unpleasant and even embarrassing to listen to.

I think I am at an advantage in the fact that my friends actually respect that the music can be enjoyable, though they don't find it so themselves (for a few of them it took a while to put straight their opinions of "videogame music isn't real music" but it has changed to at least seeing it as real music). I think a point is that my opinions and interests change for no-one (mockery for my interests in Poirot and A Touch of Frost, and classical music have turned into respect for the fact I change my interests for no-one (I think myself almost immune to peer pressure)). Of course there is still the point that to the scum-of-the-Earth types I would never admit to the videogame music which fills my mp3 player (although strangely enough I do admit to classical music).

Although having said that, my Business Studies teacher actually called me a geek for my interest (my idea for my new business was an online store for videogame music and she thinks the market isn't big enough, and that the music is still like Sonic soundtracks, etc, so I'm planning to write a load of stuff giving examples and feedback of where videogame music is actually popular (Video Games Live, bands such as The Minibosses, quotes from various forums, the questionnaire I posted on various sites (1 of which blocked my IP address), etc).

And of course, as I write this I'm listening to videogame music - You Goddamned Bathead from Castlevania Chronicles.

One thing to the discussion: VGM is for me in that way important, that it's a shere endless source of inspiration for writing, what is one of my favorite things to do. When I have the appropriate tune in my ears, if dramatic, sad, joyful or romantic, for example, I can write on on my story for thousands of words, not even need to think how the story should go on. Especially very memorable moments I'm associating with certain themes, such as aeris theme(so sad...) is inspiring my in a tremendous way. And with the wide emotional variety there is in VGM, I'm momentary on 140.000 words of storywriting and there is hardly an end to see. There almost no "normal" music inspiring me in that way. As one of you said, 'escapsim' is the right word. Hearing this music, I'm far from this world, at least for some time. And it is always a good feeling to return, as from a long journey, and you dont even need drugs for this trip so it's healthy and almost complete for free...:-)

I like some of it. Most FF music calms me down. Like tifa's piano theme and whatnot. It's nice to listen to on certain days. But others don't really care for it.

Most of my favourite songs are from video games, and got countless soundtracks on my iPod, but most of my friends think i'm a bit strange for liking them too much. I don't see the problem, it's not like i'm blasting it out like some other music lovers do

It's so great when you listen to the ost of a game that you played many many years before and you have the feeling of nostalgia. And you remember your childhood...

    I love Video Game Music.

    Yes.

But, they're truly the crazy ones, because 70% of the music they listen to is crap.

My sister has about 50 of those bad songs on her mp3 player...and I'm nearing 300 of VG music mostly. (because Queen and the Who are awesome)

Agree completely! I listen to abosolutely nothing else! I'm not into what I call 'crap rap' or hip-hop or whatever. It's all garbage.

I love the icestation song from timesplitters! It's one my favorites! You should also listen to spaceport from the the very first timesplitters game. That one is awesome.

Also I find it rather difficult to answer when some1 asks me what I listen to. Sometimes I tell the truth, but more often than not I lie. I'll tell my friends what I listen to tho truthfullly.

Imo, VG music should be made more available. Sometimes there's a really old and classic vg but because it's ancient the soundtrack isn't available at all. I dislike that immensely because now I have to record songs myself!

    Yeah, mad.

"Video game music? You listen to that?"

"Uh-huh. Sure do! You oughtta try it. Gives you hair on you chest."

So you know what I do? I burn CD's of, say, Oblivion (frickin awesome soundtrack) and give it to 'em, not telling them what the hell it is. After they invariably tell me how good the music is, I make my breath smell bad, step right up to their face, and wheeze-laugh down their flaring nostrils like a madman who knows he's right, dammit. And then, I utter the immortal words:

    THAT'S MUSIC FROM.... A..... GAME!!!

    They usually convert after that.

P.S. I've loved VGM since the days of the Commodore 64 (1980's) and still listen to some of it!

I can totally relate to both of you. Even in my own family, I put up with a lot of crap from people because of my love of VGM as well as because I don't gobble up everything BET craps my way. It's pretty frustrating.

I can definitely relate to that as well. Sometimes you could be listening to the most awesome of soundtracks from a game and those around may be tapping their feet and bopping their heads but once you tell the it's from a video game, bad breath or not, some just stop and think "I can't believe I showed that I like that crap, now others are going to think that I'm a freak to!" while yet others are thoroughly impressed and actually want to listen to more.

The key to converting or convincing most people to listen to video game music is not to tell them that it's from a game otherwise some will prejudge it before giving it a fair review.

Well, I said quality. Movie music is performed by a real orchestra when game music often uses only samples.

(In other words, Mario Galaxy's music is very much like a movie's score. However, I see where you are coming from with this, and yes, Nintendo is often the exception, not the rule.)

well what Elemental Eye said is true most of videogames' music is not played with real instruments but now a days games tend to hire people to perform the scores, besides many vg's music have remakes done with real instruments.
So now there is plenty of music starring an orchesta or a rockband or whatever is needed to perform the score.

My roommates also like some video game music like I do, but people on my floor attempt to make fun of me for my VG music collection. To get back at them, the only music I share is my VG music.
