I watched Prince Planet in the mid 1970s, and then Speed Racer around 1978 or 1979. Both were in heavy syndication at the time in Chicago, but I had no clue that these were "anime", just that they were really, really good.

When they ported Gatchaman to make "Battle of the Planets" a year later, I knew the animation style was vastly different than US cartoons, and I could tell the dubbing was more blatant to my by-then more sophisticated mind, but I still had NO IDEA it was coming from Japan. It wasn't until Voltron (1984?) that I began to get a clue.

At the time, though, I hadn't heard the word "anime", but I had heard the word "Japanimation". Also I saw a news item about Japanese comic books which referred to them as "monga" (sic).

Hmmm... Teknoman Blade, Tekken the movie (WORST translation evah ), that horrid raped version of Rurouni Kenshin better known as Samurai X, and then the usual stuff like Pokémon, DBZ, Digimon etc etc.
I will kill you, or you will kill me. It does not matter.

The first anime i watched was Pokemon, Digimon and Sailor Moon. But when i watched them, i was completely oblivious to the rest of the genre.

Hellsing would have to be what introduced me. When i watched it, i knew it was an Anime, and as a result of liking it i went out and looked for more of the genre.

And as of then i noticed the anime section in my local HMV.

For me it has and will always be Sailor Moon. More like the mid-nineties when I was 11 and 12. I remember when I became a fangirl for it my big sister was like "hey a Japanese cartoon" and I was like "is that what they call them?". So it was the first anime I got into and thanks to Sailor Moon, I knew what anime is.

Now had there been no English version, I never would have knew what anime is despite that the Japanese version is wwaay better:

But just for the hell of it, here's the Japanese opening also :

Believe it or not, when I was searching for Sailor Moon stuff in '96 through magazines, that's how I first heard of FFVII (and not way long after it was release like most FFVII fans). I'm serious about that one.

They showed these shorts on Liquid TV on Mtv, 1 or 2 of the shorts from Robot Carnival were thrown in also. Where they first showed Aeon Flux and Beavis and Butthead too methinks.

Teknoman. Anybody here from Sydney Australia? More to the point, anybody remember Cheeze TV? I think that was where it all started. Although... It was probably Evangelion on SBS which seriously kick started things.
