Sally Field - Star of The Flying Nun (1967) FLAC

Sally Field - Star of The Flying Nun (1967) FLAC

The zany misadventures of "The Flying Nun" premiered on ABC over 50 years ago and ran for three seasons from 1967 to 1970. This classic sitcom was a hit and connected with the viewers due to the wholesome appeal of youthful 20 year old actress Sally Field who starred as novice nun Sister Bertrille, in combination with high winds, a large starched head gear (cornette) and lightweight of 90 pounds enabled her to become aerodynamic. She used her gift of flying through the skies like a super heroine to aid others and solve their problems which resulted in some rather humorous and embarrassing situations for Mother Superior and her group of nuns at the Convent San Tanco in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Sister Bertrille habitually sought out Carlos Ramirez, playboy millionaire casino owner who was an orphan raised by the nuns, even though he was reluctant, she could count on him to do the right thing.

Here we have the vinyl release of "Sally Field - Star of The Flying Nun" on Colgems Records COS-106 in 1967 which Field recorded with musical direction by Bob Mitchell and The Bob Mitchell Children's Choir, included a vocal version of the show's theme song "Who Needs Wings To Fly?". Dominic Frontiere, Emmy-winning composer of hundreds of hours of film and TV themes and music scores for such classics as “The Outer Limits", “12 O’Clock High", “Hang ‘Em High" throughout the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, wrote "The Flying Nun" theme song as well as three other songs on the album. One single from the album, "Felicidad", a minor hit in America and Field's only sole entry, cracked the Billboard Hot 100 at number 94 in 1967.

Never reissued to CD. Available in Stereo FLAC 16bit-44.1kHz digital format (please do not ask for mp3). No scans of artwork, except for image of front jacket cover.

    Trivia

Did you know that "The Flying Nun" was inspired by a book titled, "The Fifteenth Pelican" by Tere Rios. She created the character after a friend told her the story of seeing a nun with a large headpiece almost fly off her feet on a Paris street.

Did you know that Patty Duke fresh off "The Patty Duke Show" was first offered the role of Sister Bertrille but she turned it down. The role was next offered to Sally Field and she refused it. The producers then offered the role to Ronne Troup, but dropped her when Field had second thoughts and decided to go ahead and accept the role after her stepfather, Jock Mahoney, convinced her to accept it for job security. Troup was later offered the role of Polly Williams, Chip Douglas wife on "My Three Sons".

Did you know that before the producers committed to "The Flying Nun" were worried about how well it would be received by Catholics, so they appointed and included in the credits for every episode the National Catholic Office for Radio and Television (NCORT) to serve as the series adviser. The show was commended by several Roman Catholic orders in the late 1960s for humanizing nuns and their work.

Did you know that ABC had proposed a TV movie in the late 1980s, based on Field's character as the new Mother Superior Bertrille at the convent, having to deal with a diminutive nun who learns to fly, but becomes jealous because she can no longer fly due to putting on weight over the years. Field, vehemently declined the offer.

Did you know that Sally Field is a three-time Emmy Award winner and two-time Golden Globe Award winner who became a household name at age 20 as Sister Bertrille in the 1960s sitcom "The Flying Nun". She is also a two-time Academy Award-winning actress. She won two Oscars, for "Norma Rae" in 1979, and for "Places in the Heart" in 1984. On May 5 2014, Field received a star on the "Hollywood Walk Of Fame" for her contribution to motion pictures.

Finally, did you know there really was an original "Flying Nun", a Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity and a 1926 graduate of Catholic University (with a major in Physics and a minor in Mathematics), Mary Ann Kinsky became a licensed airplane pilot and World War II aeronautics instructor, and achieved national fame as "The Flying Nun" in the late 1930s. Military officials praised her with awards and citations, in particular was the U. S. Air Force Citation noting her outstanding contributions to national security and world peace during a ceremony in Washington, DC in 1957.

    Just to be pedantic -

Sally Field became a household name at age 19 in 1965 when she played Gidget (based on the 1959 movie with Sandra Dee).
The Flying Nun started in 1967.

The problem is, "pedantic" is used in a negative way, that is, it is used for some one who is "ostentatious, and overly concerned".

Sally Field was actually 18 when Gidget premiered in September 1965. The show lasted only one season (eight months) and cancelled by ABC because of poor Nielsen ratings. But the show gained a cult fan following (a small but very passionate fanbase) during the summer reruns. ABC had a belated hit on their hands, but refused to renew the show. Instead, created and offered Field another TV series which was "The Flying Nun".

She was offered the role of Sister Bertrille at 19, and actually 20 when "The Flying Nun" premiered September 1967.

The definition of household name is a person or thing that is well known by the public (people of a country, state, etc.).

Field wrote in her memoir "In Pieces" about struggling with periods of depression, sudden rages and binge-eating, as well as how starring in the 1960s sitcom “The Flying Nun” made her a household name, but also made her a joke to those she most admired in the acting community.

A cult fan following really doesn't constitute the public. Therefore, Sally Field became popular with a small fanbase, but not a household name when she got her first big break playing Gidget in 1965. It wasn't until "The Flying Nun" became a hit and ran for three seasons that Sally Field became a household name at the age of 20 (I made the change on the year in the trivia).

Sally Field couldn't agree with you more. She felt the show was silly and embarrassed by her work in the series. She originally didn’t want the role, but her stepfather, Jock Mahoney, convinced her to accept it for job security. She disliked the scripts so much that she refused to read them. She would learn her lines right before shooting each scene by looking at the script supervisor’s script. In an interview, she said "I was suffering so badly, I was so depressed and I was 19 and I didn't want to be playing something called the Flying Nun, I did not want to be dressed as a nun all day long".
