    Steam Release -- Worth It?

Anyone got this? Know if it's worth $12? I've read negative reviews saying they have the shitty old MIDI files but apparently there's a fix for it.

Well, I just got it and lo and behold it's actually...not bad. It comes with Chocobo World, has decently customizable controls, and while the default music is shitty, you can find an easy replacement for it online. It runs well and maintains the same feel to FF8. However...

The real travesty comes with the cheat modes that come with the Steam release. The first of these is "Magic Booster," which increases your stock of certain spells (specifically, Cure, Cura, Curaga, Fire, Fira, Blizzard, Blizzara, Thunder, Thundara, Sleep, Blind, Silence, Berserk, Bio, Esuna, Aero, Confuse, Break, and Zombie). I can kind of see where they're coming from with that one, but it only goes downhill from there. There's also Battle Assistance (which grants the following advantages in battle: ATB gauge always full, HP always full, Limit Break always available), 9999 Damage (normal attacks, certain Limit Breaks, and certain GF attacks deal 9,999 damage) AP MAX (sets level and AP of all acquired GF to max when used on the world map), and Magic and Gil MAX (sets inventory of each acquired magic spell to 100 and sets gil to maximum limit).

    Seriously? What the fuck?

Cheats are optional and you can choose not to use them, and may even alleviate alot of the time you'd spend just stocking magic. Anytime I play FF8, I spend 2-3 hours in one area not leveling up, but just stocking and refining magic. I personally love that about FF8, but am a little bit touchy when people look down optional cheating just because thats not the way they like to play.

I mean just who the fuck are you to look down on cheats just because they make the game easier for someone whose not playing for the challege? Get off your high horse and mind your damn buisness... That said... Yes, if you like FF8, its worth the $12. Believe it or not, there was a time we bought the game for $20, $30, and $50 and didn't complain. $12 is a bargain and steam sales make it better. Thoughts about the MIDI music are objective and are a relic from the old PC version. I'm sure theres a mod somewhere that imports it's original or even remastered music.

And not trying to insult or come off as mad by swearing above, I'm just using swears as emphasis, I'm not really mad or anything.

I'm more pissed off at the facts that A) Square added the cheats in the first place, and B) made them incredibly easily accessible. When you start the game, there's a start-up box that basically asks you up front if you want to turn the cheats on. It's just so easy that it's insulting to any serious gamer's integrity. It's like "Oh, we know the game is too boring and difficult, so here you go! Max gil, max spells, max everything!" If it had been a hidden cheat that you had to enter like the Konami code or something, then I may think differently about it. However, they explicitly advertised this game as having cheats on their own store site, as though they were proud of it. Look, if people want to cheat like using a Game Genie or whatever, I don't really give a shit. Hell, I might even make my own save file where I fuck around with the inventories just to see how easy it is to min-max the characters even sooner. I do, however, feel that people who do use the cheats are bypassing the game itself, and honestly this game doesn't warrant cheats (you probably already know how easily exploitable the junction system is). Moreover, my biggest concern is that this is the path the video gaming industry is taking to cater to the masses. It's like the white tanooki suit in Super Mario 3D World, which grants invincibility if you die a certain number of times in a row (I think it's like 5). It seems that developers are dumbing down their games to make it easier for everyone to be a winner and explicitly marketing the games as easy and hand-holding because people don't like losing. Watch [Hidden link. Register to see links.] if you still disagree with me.

Don't make the assumption that I don't know that there was a time we bought games for that amount of money; it makes you look like a dick. I know there was, hell I remember looking forward to certain games' release days when I would buy them for $60. I bought FFVIII in 1999 for whatever price it was at, and I still own my copy for the PS1 and have beaten it several times. The reason for this thread is to ask people's opinions on whether the Steam version was worth owning.

If you look at the post right above yours, I actually say, "while the default music is shitty, you can find an easy replacement for it online."

Because I totally couldn't understand your position unless you swore right at me. Right.

Another owner of the Steam re-release here: it's somewhat sad I can't still tell if the game was worth the purchase. I own the PlayStation and the original PC release, too; I think character(s)-models look really nice in the Steam version... But I can't say the same about backgrounds. Almost cringe-worthy.
On the topic of cheating, my opinion changes with the mood: there are days when I may feel bad about it, but I may also thank the Heavens they bothered to put something like that in the re-release. Drawing all those Spells may get boring on subsequent playthroughs, or again, someone which has already beaten the game may just want to enjoy the story/have an easier time.
At any rate, yes, the game wastes no time telling there's some form of "built-in trainer", but still, it doesn't actually force the player to use it... I can't fathom how one could get angry about it, given the circumstances.

That boring piece of dumpster sludge in disc form isn't worth a slimy copper bit.

You could spend €12 and deepthroat a cheap bop in Amsterdam's shiftiest corridors. Far more worth your while than this abysmal, bore-you-to-tears shitfest from Square-Penix.

How easy is it to apply the fan-mods to the steam release? I know someone replaced the MIDI with proper CD soundtracks for VII but the instructions sounded a royal pain in the ass.

I did the fix for the Steam version of FFVIII and it was incredibly easy. There's a [Hidden link. Register to see links.] who already provided the enhanced MIDIs in a .zip file via dropbox. All you have to do is download the file and extract them to the appropriate folder, overwriting the MIDIs that Steam gives you. That's it.

Just tried Magic Booster today and was pretty appalled at what it did. Keep in mind that you can do this an unlimited number of times. "Magic Boosting" your save file gives all your characters:

    100 Cure, 100 Cura, 100 Curaga, 100 Fire, 100 Fira, 100 Blizzard, 100 Blizzara, 100 Thunder, 100 Thundara, 100 Sleep, 100 Blind, 100 Silence, 100 Berserk, 100 Bio, 100 Esuna, 100 Aero, 100 Confuse, 100 Break, 100 Zombie

And also recall that if you have Fire-Mag Ref, Ice-Mag Ref, Lightning-Mag Ref, and all that, you're essentially also getting 100 Firaga, 100 Blizzaga, 100 Thundaga, and 100 Tornado, assuming you just refine 100 of the tier below it into 20 and just repeat the process. This essentially gives you 100 of the top spells at the beginning of the game. Utter garbage. And you can do this an unlimited number of times and it doesn't hinder you in any way. Pisses me off.

Edit: Although one major positive for having this on Steam is I can finally take screenshots of the game.
    Spoiler!

    C'est la vie.

XD T-Rex was a bit too much for ya, huh? Try the ones in Island Closest to Hell after you get Ragnarok. A single tail sweep and you're done XD

own the original on psx and the original pc cd release.
if you have played ff8 before then its not worth it.
otherwise, its still not worth it, should have bought the psn version.
