    2001 - Alex North (Flac)

    2001
The Unused score By Alex North
    Conducted By Jerry Goldsmith

A lot have been said about this monumental mistake by Kubrick, so I don´t want to put more wood to the fire, isntead, I just want to share this fantastic score, to whoever who wants it.

I'm not after the link (I have this on CD) but I would like to make a comment. I don't believe it was a mistake on Kubrick's part - at least, as far as the film goes. The way North was manipulated and lied to, was disgusting. Kubrick never intended to use the score from day one and yet he went through the motions, for no reason other than to keep the studio executives off his back. Looking at it from both perspectives; I'm sure Kubrick would have preferred to simply use the score he wanted to use from the outset and not get involved with a composer at all. He didn't mislead North out of malice, but out of a desire to protect his precious film from meddling hands. I suppose that's only marginally better. In the end, what happened happened.

I adore North's score with a great passion - but on reflection I'm pleased it wasn't used. 2001 worked with Kubrick's temp score and though it pains me to say, it doesn't with North's original music. As a standalone musical experience (particularly in Goldsmith's re-recording) it's a masterpiece... I don't think it would be heard in its best light in the film.

Either way, I'm pleased it saw the light of day. It is a magnificent piece of music.

Thank you tangotreats for your kind comment, I only wish to say this, Can you imagine Star Wars with classical music? That was Lucas´s first intention...

Regardless the good use of the classic pieces in the movie, i think that Kubrick or someone important from the studio should have more in consideration that North worked in the project for months, to at least warn him this his score would not be used before he attended the studio screening of the film.

I feel deep shame. This has been here for a while but I never seem to have come across it. I'd love to hear this unused work. Thank you.

your'e right, Tangotreats, i have the cd and i love North's work. Cléopatre, Spartacus, and one of the big hit of all times: "Unchained melody", are masterworks too.
But... i cant imagine 2001 without the fabulous music of Ligeti, that i discovered long time ago with this movie, and later, with "The shining" (and also the genious Bartok).
