    "Tomb for Fireflies"

A masterpiece from Ghigli Studios, and the saddest anime I've ever seen.

Hmm...for me...I wont say what the moments are in specific, but here's my list.

    Sailor Moon
    NANA
    Fruits Basket
    Orphen
    Revolutionary Girl Utena
    Ouran High School Host Club
Rurouni Kenshin (Thankfully Seisouhen wasn't the REAL ending, but I still bawled after)
    Scrapped Princess

I'm sure there's more, I cry at happy moments and sad ones too ^_^

No doubt about it... the saddest anime I ever watched was definitely AIR.

It's one of the most beautiful series I have ever seen, and it's only 13 episodes long, but it left a lasting impression on me.

AIR is my top favorite, and I have yet to see an anime that could go beyond this.

Go watch it if you already haven't... you'll see what I'm talking about.

The end of Macross Plus when Bowman gives his life to take out the prototype and he gives the little speech about friendship and honor, made me cry. sniff.

Grave of the Fireflies and Elfen Lied were quite depressing for me too. Byousoku 5 Centimete is also an extremely sad movie.
Also, I found some scenes from Neon Genesis Evangelion to be quite depressing, but I didn't find the series generally sad

Spike dying in Bebop was so sad, that song at the end really gets me. Also Wolf's Rain, after Cher dies it's starts a string of depressing events and deaths. God, Toboe dying, I cried forever after that and nearly stopped watching the series. But it was too good to stop.

Now this is one of my favorite animes, but Evengelion is the saddest anime for me. Very depressing at the end of the films (I won't tell ).

Also Magic Knights Rayearth is also another one of my favorites, but had alot of sad parts to it. Just to be spoiler safe, I also won't tell :P. Also X 1999 the movie.

Probably Gundam 0080. The classic star-crossed lovers theme was heartrending.

I'd definately have to say Kanon. The 2006 version is not only better looking, but also rapes you more emotionally lol. All i can say is, lots of tear-jerking moments, lots of heart-squeezing moments, and overall, its like the storywriter wanted to inflict utter despair right up until the last moment on the last episode.. lol. The ending is good, and for those who seen it but might not have noticed, theres a certain fox in the background just before the credits start playing.. :3 its Makoto

Well NANA was pretty damn sad if you ask me. The ending didn't satisfy me at all, it felt unfinished. Loved the show though.
