I don't actuall know much about them besides that you can find 4 and win 3 from certain quests and 1 from that trials thingy.

They disassemble into Elixers once you max them out. There's a 4th Elixer at the very end of the game.

I don't remember that from IX, but if that's the case I'll just say that the monsters labeled Hecatonchiers in III and IX are not representative of the source of the name.
