If the problem with mediafire and megaupload is that files don't last long enough, then what's wrong with disguising the files by renaming it (to something like family_photos.rar) and placing a password on it? Is there more to the picture that's going completely over my head? Five hours to download 400 MB is ridiculous. I've spent the last couple of days trying to download 5 GB, of which I've only managed to download two. ****ing #firstworldproblems.
Thanks for listening.
First off try this with a Premium account before you judge their speeds (obviously they are going to reduce it for free users). As far as putting a password, or renaming the file.. they still get reported by people (dumb ones yes I know). I think some people prefer Fileserve for the simple fact that if a file does get deleted it gets thrown in the DMCA tab, so you know exactly which one you have to re-upload. Unlike other hosts which don't offer that. I use a premium account with Fileserve and get my max download speed from it using Jdownloader. (I get around 8.12 MB/s)
