"There must be something in books, something we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house... "
Actually, I'm quite enjoying it so far - it's light years ahead of the first FFXIII, but still nowhere near being a classic (but then I guess anything is better than the original FFXIII).

Remember when vehicular combat was awesome? Especially with tanks? I do. I miss this genre. So I've never played Battletanx before, but its sequel, BattleTanx: Global Assault was the first N64 game I ever played, and it sold me on the console. I have all sorts of fond memories playing Global Assault evenmoreso than Goldeneye. Actually, Global Assault is pretty much Goldeneye with tanks. So I have all this nostalgia with GA that I don't have for the original title, simply because I didn't realize there was an original title until I actually played the single player campaign. Some references were made to events I had no knowledge. It still didn't detract from the experience of course, as I simply played the game for the tanks and explosions. The sound design was cool, with awesome booming sound effects *explosions*. I still listen to the soundtrack to this day (thanks to this site).
So you can imagine how I feel about playing this game. I wouldn't call it disappointment, because it's not a bad game, it's simply a predecessor to a game that I still feel is as awesome as it was when I first played it. It's just a step backward. In everything. Including sound design, because the music is really just basic midi, and it's kinda annoying.
The core gameplay is there and it's fun, though mission structure is rather basic at times. It's more fun when you're not essentially playing a multiplayer match with bots in the main game. With the lack of any real progression, you basically complete the level by completing the objectives laid out before you. A lot of times there is no "go from Point A to Point B", it's simply achieve this multiplayer-like objective, and move on. Since this game is well past the expiration date, I'm not playing it for the multiplayer, which seems to be the focus here, so I'm stuck with the single player campaign for the time being. If I'm going to be playing BattleTanx for the multiplayer, I'd sooner just pop in Global Assault.
Despite my complaints, BattleTanx is not a bad game, it is merely average. It is brought down by my familiarity with its sequel, which I have played to death.
