Well I've been doing some thinking and I asked myself... Is cloud AN EMO? Well, think a bit, spiked hair, dressed black, depressed mood, and thinks too much. And it's not hard to imagine him listening to Linkin Park or Tokyo Hotel, while cutting himself crying. What do you think about CLOUD'S EMONESS?! Acctualy it would be pretty cool if cloud was an emo :P

We already have a resident emo philosopher. Look for him in General Discussion. His name is Sciz_Bisket and he's good peoples.

First it is important to notice that Squall is far more emo than Cloud could ever be, but that Cloud is, nonetheless, assuredly emo. C'mon, holding onto Aeris's memory qualifies him right off the bat. Also, dress isn't as important to being emo as an outsider might think.

Further, Linkin Park is not emo. Linkin Park is teh suck. Big difference :p

I only say all this because I have a feeling Neo is going to close this thread anyway :D

Thank you for wishing me bad luck in a indirect way and could you specify Squall's emoness? And you have to admit that Linkin Park is kinda emo...

You kids need to go kill yourself. Cloud is a fucking japanese video game character, nothing more. Got that?

Neg
06-01-2007, 06:24 PM
No I don't. You explain to me how they are remotely emo. They're a little whiny sure, but I don't think I've ever heard a song of theirs I'd categorize as emo. I will admit that I haven't heard their new album, so you may have me there.

How is Squall NOT emo, is the better question. In short, Squall's entire path of development is built around not wanting to care about others to being completely in love with Rinoa, and caring about his comrades. Everything about it is emo.

At least we agree that Cloud is emo, even if we can't agree on the classification of bands ;)

Seriously... Why do you consider people emo if they care about someone? cloud cared about aeris, and when she died he couldn't forget about her, how is that emo?? That happens in life between some husbands and wifes, say someones wife dies, he may never remarry because he can't forget about her.

And Squall, how is caring about your "team" emo? In the army wouldn't you care about your squad unit if they lived or died? And maybe he thinks to much cause he doesn't want to blab his mouth before thinking about what he's going to say, unlike most people.

You're working under an assumption that I'm not. That assumption is that emo is bad. You can't tell it right now, but I did start here at shrine with the user title "emo kid, level 9." What we are mentioning is emo because it is emotional, and that is a good thing, for the most part.

Cloud refusing to let go of Aeris's memory to the detriment of other things in his life is destructive. He has to let go of it, which he arguably does in Advent Children. Not completely of course, but to the point that his 'normal' and productive behaviors resume.

Squall has every right to care about Rinoa and his comrades. I never said there was anything wrong with being emo. There is something wrong with it when someone exhibits "stereotypical" emo behaviors like I said above. I.e., the whole "I'm nothing" "I can't go on without her, even though she wants nothing to do with me" and of course behaviors like the oft-parodied cutting of one's own wrists.

funnyboy4004
06-02-2007, 02:15 PM
well i consider emotional people, are people who inflict pain on themselves because of the reasons you stated. Neither inflicted pain on themselves. I think they acted the way they did because they were stressed and depressed that it happened, and they blame themselves because Squall said he would protect Rinoa and same for Cloud and Aeris.

beat
06-02-2007, 02:17 PM
Squall = Emo. Just him thinking about how people will perceive him after his death is enough to classify him that way.

Cloud= F'ed up in the head. Can't blame a guy for being a bit emotional after realizing that a lot of your own memories were all lies.

As for the Linkin Park thing...I can't really say they are emo...but sometimes I do wonder if they are. Chester's lyrics are all whiney/emo-ish. Shinoda's lyrics are all about taking action and using your power or something.

Personally I just think Chester is emo because of Shinoda's rapping.

Neg
06-02-2007, 02:22 PM
Maybe you're right, maybe "stereotypical" emo individuals are the only emos and I'm artificially trying to create a category for myself and others who realize the stupidity of such but still don't want to discount the joy that can be had from emotional abandon and "holding on" at least for a little while.

At this point, I will bow out of this thread. Mainly because I've said all that I think I can on the subject, and I'm sure someone will be along to rebuttle me pretty soundly. I'll certainly listen with open ears if they do.

Cloud is NOT emo, neither is Leon (Squall). What is with you ppl? Did you know that in New Jersey and in many other places, emo guys wear GIRL PANTS?? I'm sure Cloud and Squall DO NOT wear GIRL PANTS.
But then again, they don't live in NJ. But they are NOT emo...

Emo is not bad. In fact, I have many emo friends. But I agree with C10ud. Squall, Cloud, people like them are NOT emo. They're just dark or cold, lonely people, who can improve themselves.
Seriously, there's nothing wrong with that.

I thought the general slang meaning of emo meant 'very emotional'.

In which case, how is Squall emo? He hides his emotions away from everyone else. It's sort of the same with Cloud. By that meaning of the word, the real emo protagonists would be Bartz and Zidane.

Neg
06-25-2007, 02:22 PM
Squall comes to reveal those emotions over the course of the game. Squall develops into a beautiful emo flower :p

in other words if you have had a tough life and than a girl you like dies in front of your eyes you would feel pretty down i think. so i don't really think his character is 'following' the emo image.

was emo even around 10 years ago?

Well I know Emocore genre has been around since the mid 80s, but it wasn't really commercially successful until the mid to late 90s.

Here's a question for you guys.
From what I have seen explained here as emo does that mean that Tina/Terra from ff6 could be considered emo as well?

She is born from two different species with their own different ranges of emotions. She was taken by the empire and raised and trained to be a cold, calculating, super-solder devoid of any emotions which is further strengthened by the use of a slave crown which suppresses emotions. Since she was taken while she still a baby I will assume that she was being conditioned for most of her young life to the point of ff6s opening, When she was freed from the slave crown by Locke.

It seems to me by the presentation of the game that Tina/Terra was probably bombarded by waves of emotions that she would be unprepared to handle. In the first half of the game she seemedvery introverted and quiet. She also seemed to tag along and attach herself to emotionally strong characters such as Locke and to a lesser extent Edgar, Sabin, and Celes in order to learn how they deal with emotions.

One of the big turning points in her life was probably reuniting with her father as she seemed a bit more open afterward. however the big point in the possibility of her being emo is the whole situation with the orphans and her inability to fight in the second half. She herself stated that there was a bunch of feelings that she was going through that she wanted to deal with on her own.

Your opinions?
Edit: Fixed for the most part. Sorry.

-_- Well... me, as creator of this thread, I haven't posted for a bit... now decided to get back to the forums... Well the subject has Developed well :D, analizing what Knegative said in one of the first posts XD, well, getting back to the point, you could say that Terra was a little emo-ish, when she had to deal with the emotions, ''difficulties'' about dealing with emotions, can be considered an emo atribute, yes. And she was very dependent of her friends, so she could ''survive'' to the torrent of emotions that was affecting her... although she gets to a point, starting to get independent, and gaining strenght to face the world. By this time she was already leaving the ''emo-state''.

yes cloud is an emo, in advent children mainly, and this is mirrored by vincent being painfully emo in dirge of cerberus. oh look! square enix also give both characters the exact same template for ridding themselves of their emo guilt too. i.e. the returns of old enemies, conveniently, for them to kill to rid themselves of guilt over old loves. what originality from SE.

the emo trend is painful to see on britains streets, and although it isnt as terrible as the chav scourge, it isnt far off it.

have you misunderstood me? whatever. i went to give it a name, an emo festival, and was shocked at how plastic the trend is. luckily we are scientists and thrice and goldfinger and gym class heroes and billy talent played. sorry but emos are a really shit movement. nu metal was just as bad. punk is dead, because it was an ideology and not a label as it is bandied around as now. metal is not my thing but i appreciate metal heads for what they are;

back on topic - in advent children cloud revisits themes he dealt with in the game, which is a shame because he could have done something interesting instead.

nu metal was just as bad.

Nu Metal is kind of a joke to me. The worst offender was Limp Bizkit...no matter how hard Fred Durst tried, I couldn't take him seriously. Maybe it was because I swore he was bald under that damn had he ALWAYS wore, or maybe because I thought his poor lyrics ruined what would otherwise be good guitar. I won't even go into how much I don't like Linkin Park.

I think Cloud was less emo in FFVII:AC, though not by much. He did kick lots of ass in flashy fashion, though.

About Terra: she was pretty emo too. Unlike Cloud and Vincent, she didn't need an entire new story to get out of it. She seemed like she was getting a good hold on herself until the world went to shit, but she recovered when her friends went back and got her to thrash Phunbaba.

all those bands were fucking shite. the only one from that pigeonhole i listen to is system of a down, because they are a good band. i never gave korn a listen so i wouldnt know.

what? in ff7 cloud is INSANE, and then tifa takes a stroll around his mind with his real self and helps that self destroy the insane bits and the other personalities that jenova assumed for him when imitating zack, and then normal again they all skip to the north crater and destroy sephiroth and save the planet. in AC, cloud walks around mumbling about how he cant help anyone because he has geostigma and is on a major guilt trip about not saving aerith even though sephiroth's manipulations made it impossible for him to prevent her death, all with the same facial expression, before growing some bollocks and entering the rage to slay sephiroth after aerith performs her great gospel for him from BEYOND THE GRAVE. throughout the film, he only smiles twice. emo.
