I don't think it's someone pretending, and even if it is, they're helping me get rid of the releases that aren't supposed to be posted on the forums, not scaring members away. I'm going to present a little scenario here to you guys in this thread, and I'll also put it in a separate thread in General Discussion that you can answer. I would also like anyone from Varese and any of the other major labels to read this post as well.

For this example let's use the film score to The Dark Knight. Now let's say that for this scenario that when the score was released inside the packaging was a 16 digit code, with a link to a site called makingofscore.thedarkknight.com.

Now on this site would be information on all aspects of making the score. From initial writing sessions by Hans Zimmer and James Newton-Howard, to videos of the scoring sessions at Air Lyndhurst from inside the control room and in Lyndhurst Hall. All the information that myself and maybe some of you who avidly scan the special features on DVD's for docs like this would want.

Now we come to the best bit. Let's say that on the site there is a blurb that says "Now you love this score, but if you are interested we also have the following that you can purchase"

Complete Recording Sessions: Which would be the raw audio data taken from the 96ch Neve 88R mixed down to two tracks including ambience and live acoustical signature.

Alternate Takes Different variations on themes which may have not made the grade but would be interesting to hear.

Early Themes Or as I like to call it 'The Holy Grail' which would be the ten hours of music on a iPod that was given to Christopher Nolan by Hans and James.

Any more suggestions please post.

Pricing and Format

Now at the moment the only real way of providing this audio would be solely Internet based which brings the format question into light. Now an example here is a company called Linn that provides hi-fi and home theater systems. Now Linn runs it's own record label, Linn Records, which provides both Classical and Jazz music from their own and different labels for purchase on CD and also for download.

Now one of the reasons why I purchase records from Linn is that they offer the widest range of formats that I've seen from 320kpbs MP3 up to 24-bit 192khz FLAC. In my scenario imagine that this is the model we're using.

Let's take Alternate Takes, a collection of 25 themes and let's use English pounds.

MP3 320KBPS 44.1KHZ £10.00
FLAC 16-bit 44.1KHZ £12.00
WMA 16-bit 44.1KHZ £12.00

Now how good is that huh?.

Now this is the business model I would like to see and it's the business model I hope that you other guys would like to see because it caters for the guy who just liked the music and who just wants to listen to it while driving his car, or riding the bus to work. To the guy like me who scans the back of the film DVD's for 'Making Of's' about the score, and also to the guy like me who is a audiophile who dumped $1099 on a pair of headphones and wants to hear his music in the best possible quality.

It's Internet-based which means it's much, much cheaper and more money because there are fewer people in the production can go to supporting the artists who write the music that we love.

This is something I have wanted for a very, very long time and if you think so too. Then let's start the revolution.

Interesting comment. There are of course, other issues that would have to be worked out, such as additional licensing rights, and data prep, but it wouldn't take much to try a pilot program as a proof of concept.

I was going to forward a suggestion from my better half that in the case of out of print albums that they start marketing them digitally, ala itunes, thus keeping them available for fans, (and earning revenue for the company,) while keeping overhead to a minimum.

Ok, here's a tough one. H.G Wells' The War of the Worlds by Jamie Hall. Not Spielberg one, or The Asylum one with C. Thomas Howell, but one from Pendagron, directed by Timothy Hines, from 2005.

Score was released in Itunes I hear, and I wonder if anyone got his or her hands on it. Movie was quite awful (talk about low production values...), but score sounds good. WithBadIntent - I agree with what you are saying somewhat. There has to be some way to get these digital downloads to be available in lossless. Perhaps eventually with these new fangled printers that can apparently print physical things we will be able to purchase the data to print a CD online so that it prints only one CD and the audiophiles can have the physical booklet and case and all that shit.

Your apology is accepted. The problem is that this film is so independent and obscure that there is no hope for a released soundtrack. Basically what I was asking around for was a possible promo or, more likely, a custom bootleg. Thus the intended pessimism that you picked up on. However I've found that it never hurts to ask, because 1 out of 10 times there actually is something to be found out there...

have you tried asking in other forums that do film muisc? you tried communities in dc++ ? if the movie is independent, how about the composer directly? maybe there's no licensing issues.
