The Roaring 20's - Songs from the Warner Bros. TV Show - Dorothy Provine (1960, 1961) FLAC + Scans [2011]

Take a trip down memory lane like no other or a great way for someone to hear what music was like back in the jazz age "The Roaring 20's".

Modern audiences are apt to ask the question: Who is Dorothy Provine? You've seen her before in movies and television, but maybe couldn't connect the face with the name.

The stunningly beautiful shapely leggy blonde actress was a triple threat and much in demand in the 60's. She could dance, sing and act, including having nearly perfect timing as a comedienne, but still remained underrated. A reviewer once said "a talented girl whose comedic gifts were never sufficiently tapped into by Hollywood".

Signed up by Warner Bros. and seemingly better suited for the small screen, Provine was a constant presence and guest starred on countless episodic tv shows (mostly westerns), and starred in two tv series: a period role as 1890s saloon singer Rocky Shaw, the friend of gold fortune seeker Roger Moore in "The Alaskans" (1959-1960) and her big breakthrough role in the 1960-61 television series "The Roaring 20's" as flapper Pinky Pinkham, a beautiful singer and dancer who owns a fashionable speakeasy, the Charleston Club, where bootleggers, mobsters, and local crime bosses always seem to find her club the perfect hangout during the prohibition era in New York City. She is friends with two crime reporters who play detective, and with Pinky's help, solve crimes and put crooks and raceteers in jail. Pinky sings one song per episode with a group called The Playboys provide musical backing along with two girls as backup singers.

Ironically, today she is best known for appearing in a movie full of otherwise famous people in lightweight comedies such as playing the gigantic, radiation-exposed fiancee opposite rolypoly comedian Lou Costello in the science fiction comedy, "The 30 Foot Bride of Candy Rock" (1959); she's part of the zaniness (as Milton Berle's angelic wife) with an all-star cast in Stanley Kramer's mammoth homage to slapstick comedy, "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (1963); appeared as Jack Lemmon's devoted, but growingly worried significant other in the suburban comedy "Good Neighbor Sam" (1964); played Hayley Mills' beleaguered older sibling in the feline caper, Disney's "That Darn Cat!" (1965); has a small cameo role as the seductive saloon barroom singer, Lily Olay performs the Henry Mancini/Johnny Mercer tune "He Shouldn't-A, Hadn't-A, Oughtn't-A Swang on Me" in the Blake Edwards' slapstick all-star farce "The Great Race" (1965); serving in Her Majesty's Secret Service as British agent Provine teams up with CIA agent Mike Connors to stop a madman from sterilizing the human race in the contrived James Bond spoof, "Kiss the Girls and Make Them Die" (1966); she plays a pure-hearted money cutter who goes gaga over U.S. Mint co-worker Jim Hutton and help along with other cohorts in crime to break into the United States Treasury in the comedy heist, "Who's Minding the Mint?" (1967); and her last screen appearance as Dick Van Dyke's romantic interest in a madcap plot to steal a priceless painting with a motley crew of criminals in the Disney comedy "not quite so", "Never a Dull Moment" (1968).

In 1968, after a busy decade in show business, Provine married English-American director Robert Day, appeared in only three TV shows in the 1970s, commercials, occasional guest appearances and "straw hat" summer theater productions. After the couple moved to Bainbridge Island in 1981, she spent her last two decades living in Washington State in seclusion, and passed away at the age of 75 from emphysema in 2010.

But getting back to "The Roaring 20's", it was during this period, Provine recorded two albums for the Warner Bros. record label. She did not have any chart entries in the US, but made the UK Top 20 with two chart singles "Don't Bring Lulu" (#17 in 1961) and "Crazy Words, Crazy Tune" (#45 in 1962). Here we have Provine's two albums: "Music from The Roaring 20's Warner Bros. New Hit Television Show, songs by Dorothy Provine and the music of Pinky and her Playboys" (1960) and "Vamp Of The Roaring 20's" (1961) featured well-known old-time music medleys digitally remastered in stereo on CD in 2011 by Sepia Records (UK). Musical direction by Alexander 'Sandy' Courage. Yes, the same composer who is best known for writing the theme music for the original Star Trek TV series.

Trivia:

Did you know that the onscreen romance in the TV series "The Alaskans" (1959-60) reflected in real life, the fact that co-star Roger Moore had fallen in love with Provine, which almost caused a rift between him and his wife, Dorothy Squires.

Did you know that Provine had an infamous encounter with Frank Sinatra who she was dating at the time in 1961. So the story goes, Provine accompanied Sinatra and songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen to the Indian Wells Country Club. Mob boss Sam Giancana orders Sinatra to tell Desilu studio boss Desi Arnaz that his Italian friends didn't like “The Untouchables” program and that it makes all Italians look like killers. Arnaz refuses to change anything and Sinatra who doesn't want to harm a friend, just fumes.

Did you know that Provine appeared briefly as a duo with George Burns in a 1963 Las Vegas nightclub act, replacing Burns' ailing wife Gracie Allen. They named the act "The Roaring Sixties". In the act they danced together in the "old soft shoe", sang together in close harmony ballards of World War 1 era, and exchanged quips and jokes similiar to the type of act that George with Gracie did in "The Burns and Allen" show.

Did you know that Warner Brothers wanted to cast Provine in an upcoming TV series "The Perils of Pauline" in 1963. But she refused, instead asked to be cast in a movie. The series never materialized. In 1964, she bought herself out from her Warner Brothers contract.

Thanks so much for the link. Listening to it now. Born in '62 ~ and I enjoy going back and filling in gaps in musical knowledge from that era. I used my pursuit of wanting this album as the basis for figuring out the intricacies of FFShrine and, thanks to you, am on the road to success. Hope I can soon become savvy enough to share some treasures too.
