Cowabunga, dudes & dudettes! Ride the Waves with 70's Surfing Movie OST Double-up Pack! [FLAC + Scans]

What in tarnation does "Cowabunga" mean? The word "Cowabunga" means in surfing lingo "greetings or goodbye or awesomeness of catching a wave" in actuality, coined and spelled differently as "Kowabunga" in 1949 by Eddie Kean, head writer for the late 1940s to early 1950s NBC "The Howdy Doody Show", was written for the indian character Chief Thunderthud to express surprise or frustration on the children's TV show has passed onto the California surf culture of the early 60's to Snoopy of Charles Schulz's 1965 Peanuts cartoon thinking the word while surfing to the late 80's and early 90's skyrocketed worldwide by the Michelangelo character of the TV cartoon show "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and often associated with Bart Simpson of Matt Groening's The Simpsons, though not his main catchphrase, was largely due to the trademark phrase appearing on a T-shirt with Bart skateboarding. Bart has only expressed the phrase in a few episodes: "The Telltale Head" and "Bart Gets An F" (1990). Even the Cookie Monster used "Kowabunga" (original spelling) to illustrate the letter "K" on Sesame Street.

Now the question is who owns the rights to Cowabunga and earns money from its useage? Eddie Kean states he never made a dime and has negated any claim to the word since he was an NBC staff writer. Kean affirms, "To my knowledge NBC never registered Kowabonga or Cowabunga". Cowabunga has been registered and used by Busch Gardens for a theme park, Miller Beer in a commercial and Disney World painted it on the side of a water flume ride.

Kean further adds "But who owns Cowabunga? Search me. What I do know is that Cowabunga eventually made the Oxford and Random House dictionaries."

Totally gnarly, dude! [Gnarly means cool, awesome, rad, sweet.]

Here we have a double up surf OST feature. First up, the legendary surf, funk, psychedalic soundtrack classic from the 1972 Hal Jepsen second surf movie "A Sea For Yourself" featured the world’s best surfers practicing their art in France, Peru, Australia, California, and Hawaii. Long out of print and ultra-scarce, originally released on vinyl by Rural LP RR 002 in 1973, and Modern Harmonic reissued the digitally remastered 2 CD (Triple Gatefold with 40 page booklet) and 2 vinyl (Double Gatefold with DVD) sets in 2018. The soundtrack produced by Rick Henn and Dennis Dragon along with his brothers Daryl and Doug and sister Carmen Dragon and other friends performed a trippy journey of styles from funky freeform, with weird mix of psych styles, fuzz guitar rock to bossa-tinged acoustic instrumental sounds resembles Australian music of the 60's. Yes, that's Daryl Dragon who recently passed away in 2019, went on to become half of Captain and Tennille, husband and wife pop duo primarily in the 70's, created some cool effects and music for this project.

Next also from 1972, heralded as one of the greatest surfing films of all time that redefined the second generation of the surf movie genre, "Five Summer Stories" a time capsule cinematic cult classic documentary surf film produced by filmmakers Jim Freeman and Greg MacGillivray featured some of the biggest talents, the best surfers of its era of the early 70's, captured the artistry of surfing with a cohesive series of stories, on water super slow motion shots, surreal art of futuristic wave-riding and the distinctive music specially written for the actual filmed sequences, a perfect soundtrack by Honk, an American rock band from Laguna Beach, California turned the spotlight on surfer Gerry Lopez "Mr. Pipeline" long tube riding with their #1 hit single "Pipeline Sequence", a unique instrumental track that defined surfing, surf films, and surf music for the 70's. Originally released on vinyl in 1972 by Granite Records, later digitally remastered on CD in 1991 and reissued in 2005 by GNP Cresendo label.

Trivia:

Did you know that Hal Jepsen was the first surf filmmaker to integrate and edit contemporary music, setting the soundtrack template for virtually all surf films to follow.

Did you know that Daryl Dragon at one time worked as keyboardist for the Beach Boys from 1967 to 1972. In 1972, Toni Tennille, co-writer of her own musical "Mother Earth", needed a replacement keyboardist. Daryl heard about the opening and landed the gig. The Beach Boys were looking for an additional keyboardist, Daryl reciprocated the favor and recommended Toni. After the tour was over, Daryl and Toni collaborated and transformed into the pop duo, Captain and Tennille who went on to release a string of hit singles and host a variety TV show on ABC from September 1976 to March 1977.

Did you know that "Five Summer Stories" was the first surfing movie known for numerous innovative well thought-out ideas that worked: released with stereophonic synchronous sound with gigantic full-range speakers next to the screen, original animation of surfing and skateboarding by John Lamb, integrated new super slow motion water shot technique by pioneer surf filmmaker Bud Browne and paying surfers 15 percent from the profits (a formula divided carefully amongst 60 surfers) of the film in relation to the number of seconds they appeared on film. It took more than two years to complete the film on a big budget of $24,000 (dollar equivalent to today $144,176).

Did you know that Honk, the rock band from Laguna Beach, California began in 1970 and are still around today doing yearly “reunion” concerts to sold out venues in Southern California. The single "Pipeline Sequence" became a number one hit, after their soundtrack album for "Five Summer Stories" was released in 1972. From 1972 to 1975, the band became popular and appeared at high schools and college concerts all over California, as well as, touring the U.S. with the Beach Boys, and opening concerts for Loggins & Messina, Chicago, Jesse Colin Young, Jackson Browne, and many others. The band did not fair so well with the release of their later albums. Drummer Tris Imboden became the drummer for the band Chicago from 1990 to 2018 after replacing founding drummer Danny Seraphine. Keyboardist Steve Wood is an award winner for his work on the soundtracks for the IMAX movie "Everest" and "The Living Sea".

Did you know that MacGillivray and Freeman were given use of the Beach Boys complete library for free, because this was going to be their final surfing film and they were moving on to expand their abilities as filmmakers in Hollywood. It was a golden opportunity to use the brilliant music from the Beach Boys Surf’s Up and Holland albums.

Did you know that Greg MacGillivray worked on Hollywood movies such as "Big Wednesday" and Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining", and went on to fame and fortune, as pioneer and documentary producer/director filmmaker of critcally acclaimed and successful IMAX films: “Everest", "The Living Sea", “Mystery of the Nile,” “Dolphins,” “To Fly!” and other giant-screen epics, as well as working with the Smithsonian on film projects. He is the first documentary filmmaker to reach over a billion dollars in ticket sales at the worldwide box office. His company MacGillivray-Freeman Films helped create three Academy Award winning films and produced two more that were nominated for Oscars. His 1976 film To Fly! was the highest-grossing documentary of all time until his 1998 film Everest surpassed it.
