This mabye the most stupid question in the world, but why are most of the games set in different places. When they all share the Final Fantasy name? are most of the worlds all related in some way.

Because it'd be mighty fucking stupid if they had fifteen sequels to the same story. You'd think it would get repetitive.... Think about it!

I seriously doubt that Final Fantasy XIII will be the last Final Fantasy game. But, who knows? Square-Enix can do whatever they want to. All I can do is support the company I love. I will respect the decision they make, whether to continue the series or not to continue it.

their was quite a few that i didn't like.

FF2, FF5, FF10, FF 10-2....for years i said i didn't like FF8, but i just recently played it over again...i did like most of it (i.e. that card game thing was cool)

This mabye the most stupid question in the world, but why are most of the games set in different places. When they all share the Final Fantasy name? are most of the worlds all related in some way.

From what i gathered, final fantasy was supposed to mean that it was the Final unattainable goal (be it the salvation of the planet, fulfilment of a prophecy, bringing magic back using espers...etc.). world (literaly or figuratively) was at peace, world was threatened, all hope is lost, a final solution/prophecy is found, game is played to accomplish this goal, and world is at peace again THEN on to the next world. OR i drink too much and just made it up, you make the call.

People say this sort of thing all the time. It's never true.

When Final Fantasy games start bombing, they'll stop making them. It's pretty much as simple as that.

Just assume that pretty much anything you hear about the series ending is just a dumb internet rumour.

They like to go out with a bang....i know this isnt always true, but a lot of the time it is...a recent example is the show everybody loves raymond...they are ending the ever popular show, even though it is as popular as its ever been, cuz they want to end it on a good note...

i agree, and "...plenty of good games out there" is a great phrase. simply put, find a game, play it, like/dislike it. no need to worry about franchise rights and stability in unstable markets.

Okay here is what is going to happen.

Final Fantasy will go on to about 15 or so. It sounds ritarded to have a game called Final Fantasy 24 and you all know it.

What is going to happen is that they will start a new series that will be exactly the same as Final Fantasy only with a different name.

When it becomes repeditive? I love the FFs and all but it IS repeditive:

Dude runs around with unimportant characters, dude bumps into white mage girl, dude instantly falls for white mage girl, bunch of other characters trickle in, phsycho gets ultimate power and tries to kill all of them, dude discovers he isn't what he thought he was, dude goes to fight phsycho in some kind of alternet dimention-type-dealio.

This is based, of course, only on the FFs I've played (7, 9, 10). There is an obvious exception when it comes to X-2, of course. One of the few things I liked about that game...

How would you end the Final Fantasy series?

My god the last game would have to be something special to finish it, cause there all different stories how would one be suitable to end the series. Though with advance in technology it would take longer to develop the game, imagine Final Fantasy XIII it will be on the Ps3 but how long would it take to bring it out? at least 3 years I say and that's at least so then the Ps3 would have been out for 3 years jesus just thinking about it scares me.

Nanaki XIII

can we all agree that Final Fantasy can end for any one of the reasons previously said? who knows? i'm pretty sure we're all smart enough that when that reason comes, everyone of us will know because of statements from square will be posted EVERYWERE on the net. i wouldn't be suprised if squaresoft (don't like to call them squareenix) will advertise it as "the FINAL Fantasy". for now let's just enjoy the ride. the only thing i worry about is what i'll do when it's all over. i'm sure i'll store my huge FF collection of games, figures, triple triad cards, and stuffed Vivi doll i got from square when i registered at playOnline oh so many years ago. and did everybody know there's 3 FF games for every system generation? i'm sure 15 is the end... of THAT generation. :D ok. i'm done ranting...

If FF does end, it won't be much of a finish. Seriously, SE has repeated stories, and ideas. It's stale, and if SE is smart, they'll end FF while it's on top. But the reality is they aren't gonna end FF, because FF is the cash cow of SE.

NewModel_no15
06-01-2005, 07:11 PM
There is no need to worry. Yeah, we all like the series but I mean really look at it. If it does end would it REALLY be a bad thing? After X-2 I realized that square has lost its touch. A majority of us prefer the older ones. I think they should actually start to make a nice plot with a decent look to it. Final Fantasy X-2 showed how much they just wanted to make money, sadley its human nature to do that. I hope XIII (and others after) will be better.

I think this is probably the most intelligent post in the thread.

SE will probably continue to make Final Fantasy's until, as Ndi said, they start bombing. However at this point they will probably continue to make them in last effort attempts to revive the series, before finally announcing that they aren't making anymore.

Alternatively, they could spontaenously stop the series as TLH said, while they're on top with a game. Say XII is to be ground breaking, and the success of that game is phenomenal (God I can't spell that word), and SE may announce that they're stopping after this, because they've reached their best. It'd cause a big uproar through the world of SE fan, probably, and SE may then go onto make another game series that has features and links with Final Fantasy, while not being a Final Fantasy game, thus attracting old FF gamers to this new variant, which may contain features from other genres.

Note: may is not a definite.

I beleive that square enix is just joking about that final fantasy XIII is going to be the last final fantasy in the series as they could be sayin this to persuade us ff fantatics to buy the next couple of the series so that they can make a buddle of cash.

I also thought it might be the last one, but I've seen this logo, unsure if it is real or not, but the number XIII is coloured. If we go and look at the FFIX logo the IX was also coloured. So IX was the last one on the ps1 so either it is going to be the last one or it's just the last one on the ps2.

are you saying that the colour determines if its going to be the last of its kind on any given console?

No, like 95% of the time, the worlds are all different. There is an exception, but i think that's with FFTactics. The way I see how the games are similar is because of the fighting style, gripping RPG plot, and, up until now, the recurring love theme. FFXII isn't supposed to have a love theme in it, from what i've heard. (Vaan and Ashe are just friends, i suppose?)

Hironobu Sakaguchi (Exective producer) has stated numourus times that love is a sub theme in final fantasy 7 & 8.
His intention (and a lot of his inspiration) was the SCI-FI theme as he enjoys Starwars and Stargate.

This SCI-FI theme is re-occuring through the series but from 9 onward it has been a love theme and Sci-fi got the back seat with final fantasy XII it is a case of switching themes again with love as the sub theme.

Okay here is what is going to happen.

FFXIII is going to be the end because a) Hironobu Sakaguchi has resigned from SQUARE which affects his control over the FF series and b) I forget where I read it but SQUARE hints that FFXIII will be the final one because 13 is a lucky number in Japan (despite how unlucky it is here). Plus, SQUARE said that they would like to focus on something else besides the FF series. But don't worry, Sakaguchi's new company Mistwalker is creating RPG's and knowing Sakaguchi's style, they would be similar to the FF games. Plus, Uematsu has joined Mistwalker aswell (although he still has his own private company, Smile Please). People in the future who own an XBOX 360 should probably get their hands on Blue Dragon the first of Mistwalkers games (although it is promising to be much like a mixture of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, Original isn't it? Not)

This is a rumour. There is no confirmation by Square-Enix as of yet and the source of this rumour is unknown. Of course, there's always a possibility that after the release of Final Fantasy XII that Square-Enix will announce a final Final Fantasy but I doubt it.

The series has recently hit the age of 3D and good graphics, it is unlikely that they'll pass up the chance to make Final Fantasy bigger than before. With the coming of the next generation consoles the possibilities of all games have been greatly increased. This can enable Final Fantasy to have better visuals and (hopefully) depth. A series cannot go on forever but it is unlikely that the Final Fantasy series will be terminated in such an age when technology is rapidly increasing.

Trance Kuja
07-07-2005, 11:14 PM
If what your saying is true, id think that the FF series would be terminated at the end of the "Next generation" consoles. It can't get much better than it already is. It would be a wise decision to terminate at the end of the Next Generation Console age. Plus, you can't ge much better than FFXII, Better graphics, less Uematsu and more Sakimoto, hopefully better voice actors and it seems to be going back to old school in terms of story. Bravo Square!

People, you reliaze that S-E could just scrap the FF games, then make a virtually identical game to FF but slap on a new title (example: Rune Fighter???). Practicly every game S-E makes these days are the same. Star Ocean 3, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, its all the same stuff, just different characters and different story.

OK, just about every S-E game is an RPG. Now before the horrible merger between an already good Square and an excellent Enix they had quality games and quality features. Now that they have merged, Yoichi Wada thinks it's cool just to make RPG's with the same features everytime (Battle Gameplay is basicly the same in Star Ocean 3 and Kingdom Hearts). The only promising aspect of S-E is their music (with the exeption of Kumi Tanoika and Naoshi Mizuta) composers and wonderful synth operators. Evident enough?

Hello moron. Let me educate you.

Kingdom Hearts was the last game created when Square was still an independent entity - the original case (i'm looking at it right now!) says 'Squaresoft' on the front. The platinum (greatest hits) release, says 'Square Enix', because it was released after the merger.

Star Ocean: Til the End of Time was developed by Tri-Ace, a completely different company, and published by Square Enix. The development teams have not merged - the merger was a completely business oriented decision. As of the moment, the development teams have not merged - Square's development teams are still together, as are Enix's.

Whether you like a game or not does not change the truth, and making up lies to make yourself feel better at night doesn't help anyone. If you don't like Square Enix games, don't buy them.

Also, the new music direction is completely awful. Final Fantasy X-2, without the direction of Nobuo Uematsu, was a horrible J-popish mix tape. Not to mention Final Fantasy XI's music isn't up to the same standard.

I really, really hope that FF12 gets it right - the trailer is promising, but trailers can be decieving.

Regardless of anything else you said, if you listen to FFX OST you will relize that every song on that OST is great... except Uematsu's tracks. His tracks on that OST sound like uninspired drivel that is easily forgettable. Nakano and Hamauzu's tracks are inspirational and should be noted that Hamauzu is a genius and surpasses Uematsu's talent in every way. Plus, I think that it was so inappropriate that Uematsu's name was put in the opening credits (as "Composer and Sound Director" or something like that) before Hamauzu and Nakano's names (which were shown minutes latter as "Other Music". Respectful isn't it) appeared.

FFX-2 was a new direction. Just about everything was bad in it... except the music. Now, what would you want, Uematsu's generic orchestral tracks or Noriko Matsueda and Takahito Eguchi's jazzy / fusion flair supproting the fun atmosphere that the game was set in. The music isn't Matsueda and Eguchi's best, but it certainly is worth getting the OST for.

I agree that FFXI's music was downright boring. Mizuta should get fired for it (and maybe Tanoika).

FFXII music will no doubtly be right. Sakimoto hasn't done a bad score to date. His style is much better than Uematsu's and VGM fans completely agree that Sakimoto is, I dont know, 50 times better than Uematsu is. Whoever made the decision to hire Sakimoto deserves a huge cookie and 1 million dollars. Plus, his Orchestration skills are far superior to Uematsu's. When partnered with Masaharu Iwata, he is unstopable.

By the way, the reason why Uematsu is popular is because FF is popular. If FF never got the attention back in 87, then Uematsu wouldn't even be at this status right now. For the love of god, Yuzo Koshiro should have been the person composing FFin the SNES days.

Im still waiting for a solo FF game composed by Hamauzu though.

You are saying that FFX-2's music was good, are you? Thank you for reminding me; that was one of the things I hated most about FFX-2. It disregarded all set RPG music traditions and added to the overall flavour of failure. And personally, I liked the FFX music. Maybe not able to live up to the music of FFVI or other classics but still noteworthy.

It is good. It's not great and is certainly not a masterpiece but I think it atleast surpasses Uematsu's work on FFX.

People, you reliaze that S-E could just scrap the FF games, then make a virtually identical game to FF but slap on a new title (example: Rune Fighter???). Practicly every game S-E makes these days are the same. Star Ocean 3, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, its all the same stuff, just different characters and different story.

origionally square was an action genre company with a few racing titles
and a game like space harrier call 3d runner

they never acheived the popularity of FF besides look at driving emotion type s
total flop! it is hard to break old habbit...especialy if Rpg is what made square what it is.

as for rpg all being the same....my point of view is that it is hard to expand a genre like that...square loves cinematics so turnbased provides the soloution for fitting masssive spells into one move.

It is hard, but SQUARE is a huge comapny and they could atleast think of one thing original.

Look, what do you define as original in a RPG? An RPG follows strict rules, not allowing much leeway. Basically, it has to be a dramatic story set in a fantasy/sci-fi realm with weapons, items, spells and all sorts of whatnot. Kingdom Hearts was original. So was Final Fantasy X-2. Square-Enix has a monopoly on RPGs and they do a damn good job making RPGs. Sure, there's the occasional slip up but if you look at their games, almost all of them have good plots and great gameplay. I challenge you to tell me what would be so original.

it would be nice to see final fantasy more nonlinear as a standard
entire real time graphics between destinations but not like FF10 im thinking more like aidyn chronicles.
i would like to see something a bit more involving than turn based battles
mini games are boring comapared to arcade feel of the older ones in FF7

Oh, I don't know, maybe a character for one that doesn't act Generic or look like Tidus.

Maybe a final boss that you could actually see in the game before you vs him.

Maybe new ideas for gameplay?

Maybe releasing a game which hasn't got the title Kingdom Hearts, or Final Fantasy on it?

Just a few ideas

Tidus was different to other main characters in FFs. So was Wakka.

Like Sin? Or that machine thing from FFX-2? Or Sephiroth?

Like the Sphere Grid? Or Materia?

Secrets of Mana, Chrono Trigger etc.

So you see that Square-Enix actually makes original games after all.

We are talking about after the merger S-E. Kingdom Hearts is counted in the merger.

Tidus? We are talking about character that are different to Tidus.

The Machina Thing? It was Shuyin. You didn't exactly see him in the game (not including movies) untill the end. Sin wasn't the final boss, Yu Yevon was. And this was before the merger.

Again, before the merger

Again, before the merger.

What does the merger have to do with anything? It just a business thing, the final fantasy production crew would be almost unchanged. Firstly, you saw Shuyin many times in the game, I know that much. Yu Yevon is the thing possessing Sin, of course we're not gonna see him/it. I was saying that Tidus IS original.

The merger has quite a big role in it. Since the merger, crews have changed some of Enix workers were involved in the projects. Anyway, this whole argument was about the originality of S-E's games AFTER the merger. As for the shuyin remark, you saw him twice in the game (not including the movie sequences) once at the beggining (which doesn't really count) and one at the end when you are fighting him.

And Square-Enix should stop with the whole possesing thing. They did it in FFX, then they did it in KH (not to mention they did it in FFVIII and I think in FFVII.)

Tidus isn't original. Thats that.

Raidenex
07-09-2005, 01:02 AM
Like I said before, Kingdom Hearts was made just prior to the merger.

Also, you're lying about the production teams changing. Even if they did, it would be a good thing, because you'd have two lots of creativity.

And since you obviosly didn't listen before, Star Ocean, the game you say is 'so much the same as Kingdom Hearts' was developed independently by Tri-Ace. Not to mention the battle system is completely different, which you would know if you played games instead of just pulling false 'facts' out of your arse.

If real-time combat means that a game is the same, then Zelda and Jade Empire must be exactly the same as Kingdom Hearts as well!

And finally, of course Tidus is original. You show me any other movie, book, TV show, game with a lead character named Tidus with the same personality and looks. If you can't find one, Tidus is original - that's the definition.

The credits change all the time. None of the credits bare the same names, merging with Enix changed a few people around. So, therefore having a few changes.

If real-time combat means that a game is the same, then Zelda and Jade Empire must be exactly the same as Kingdom Hearts as well!

Maybe, just maybe, Except the other way round.

The fact that Tidus is basically based on previous FF characters (besides the whole "im soo cool" feature). Cloud had a big sword, Squall had a big sword, and, what do you know, Tidus has a big sword. His hair is bassically the same as Zidane's hair. His personality is bassicaly the same as Butz from FFV (and just about any other character from the SNES days). Even his character theme bares a strong resembelance to Zidanes theme. Now you tell me what is so original about him?

And what was the whole Star Ocean comment you made all about? Of course there are workers from Enix in it. And a note about Star Ocean 1. For one, Sakuraba was part of Enix then and he contributed to it.

Please forgive any rash coments I made about S-E and RPG's in general. I think the FF series is wonderful and should continue (but end in the near future). Truth is, I read that FF creators are thinking to put FF to an end soon because they want to focus on other games. Sakimoto is a prime and represents a new twist for the series. Lets hope he replaces Uematsu and becomes the main composer of FF (alongside with his Basiscape team including Namiki and Iwata).

It doesn't matter if it takes long to complete, it is more than worth it playing it again. Of course, there is the lack of "surprising" moments, but if you just leave it for half a year or so you will still enjoy the emotional moments. FFX-2 may have been a little dissapointing, but I still enjoyed it and think it's still absolutely playable even though I've played through 2 times. As for FFVIII I can't say anything. With how good all the final fantasy games have sold why would they stop, it makes them a TON of cash, pretty much if it says final fantasy (next number after the most recent) then ppl will buy it. When final fantasy 9 came out i knew nothing about it, but i bought it for the fact it was the next final fantasy game, square makes so much money off final fantasy games i really can't see them stop making them in the future unless sales for them drop to the point they aren't making money anymore, which most likely won't happen.

Well, I totally agree - as long as there are enough people who are dying for a new Final Fantasy, there will be one. Although I also agree that sometimes these people also like to kill off a successful franchise for no reason (look up Shigesato Itoi and Mother 3 - M3 will supposedly be the last Mother/Earthbound game dispite the game's cult-like following).

Still, it remains to be seen. Depends on how clever/stupid Square's marketing staff are.

I dunno, back when they were SAVED from extinction after the production of the first Final Fantasy they had decent advertisement techniques and even today they are getting the word out a lot more such as mainstream commercials. I think that advertisement and marketing wont be as much of a problem as say the writers of the series. There could be a problem bringing in new people because they could totally mess up everything Final Fantasy is about, but then again you cant necessarily keep the veterans for too long because they start running out of and reusing old ideas.

Yeah you probably drink too much. Back in the mid 80s, Square was not doing so well. The execs asked Sakaguchi to create a RPG type game after seeing how well the Enix Dragon Quest game was doing. If the game was to fail, the company was going bye bye. So Sakaguchi named the game Final Fantasy thinking it might be the last game he would produce. But the game succeeded and we all know the rest of the story. I thought this was common lore among Final Fantasy fans...

You do realise that they put a LOT of money into the first final fantasy movie and it didnt do well so they lost an amazing amount of money. Many people thought that it would discourage them from making another, FFVII: Advent Children anyone?

Well, to be honest, the first movie, TSW, really wasn't a good showing of the Final Fantasy series. It had a weak plot, and, I fell asleep. So, no it didnt fare well.
However, Advent Children was COMPLETELY different. It was based off of a proven money maker, FFVII. It didnt make its own storyline, and all of SE's fans already adored many of the characters. I'm sure figured it would make them a lot of money. So, I believe that square will keep on keepin' on till they can't keep on no mo'.

Yea I ran into him I think, Hes just Topcat and I'm Topcat77 I hope it doesn't get too hard to notice. The sign in let me keep it so I thought noone had it.

I was upset with Advent Children, because of the fact where was the fights and whats up with cloud beating seph like he was nothing. It was boring with more talking than anything. Its great because it was based on VII. Come on tell me it wouldn't have been awesome to see a Super Nova.

I don't think XIII is the last, but I'll bet everyone that it won't make it to XXX.

Its not the fact they make more money, they could very well just stop just look at Chrono that game was $80 the last time I looked in a game magazine.
Chrono should be in its 7th game at least, but they stopped making that series.

And a lot of people love Chrono better than Final Fantasy.

I think Square will stop when enough is enough and they wanna make something else, maybe to see if they can kill the FF series and make another big hit. Besides, no other rpg is up there with FF, so they don't even have any competition. How boring is that.

They don't have competition everywhere around the world, but in Japan, Dragon Quest is more popular than Final Fantasy.

Why would they stop making a game that is one of the biggest selling gaming franchises in the world?

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

near the bottom of that page gives the worldwide franchise sales. I don't know how accurate it is, but apparently Final fantasy is the 4th biggest selling franchise.

I hope it doesn't end, 13 looks awesome and I can only imagine what a company like SE can do. But hell, if it ends I'll buy the rights and continue myself. :D
