Oh, there's all sorts of little odds and sods! We still don't have the film version of track 2, but it's no big loss. On the other hand, it's fascinating seeing Zimmer's original intentions and it leaves you wondering why they weren't kept: a lot of the stuff here doesn't even appear as it does on the album! The last track, for instance, is remarkedly different in its choral arrangement!

Stampede makes me cry. I think maybe the Instrumental Demo for Circle of Life was supposed to be The Lion in the Moon song, possibly. Probably not. But that's what that song was supposed to sound like, a dreamier version of Circle of Life.

If the rumours of the FYC existence are true, then this release means the FYC no longer has any value as we now have everything. It's definitely an earlier version. And as I said before, the film sound mixers were clearly combining demo cues with the originals: the demo Circle of Life contains the exact interlude the film does. That being said, the film chorus mix for many of the cues is still preserved on the sessions.

Where's Mufasa's song 'To Be King', and the 'Be Prepared Reprise', and 'The Lion in the Moon' song (which I'm very interested to listen to....) Just pointing this out. I'm so happy with this release. No complaints here.

Also, even if we have everything from the FYC, you and I better team up in a bid for it, because I think there's stuff on there that needs to be heard. Even if you don't believe that, I will be dropping some big bucks on that some day. If it EVER wants to appear. I think it will now, at least...more easily. One person on Soundtrackcollector claims to have the FYC, but he's private, so oh well.

The only one that was anywhere near completion was the Be Prepared Reprise (I have heard a version that was further along than the one that appears with the Madness of King Scar scene, though it was moved earlier in the film). If I had to guess, I'd say that it doesn't actually exist in useable form any more. it was, after all, a ditched song. Warthog Rhapsody gets a free pass because the stems were preserved thanks to its appearance in Rhythm Of The Pride Lands.

Yeah, I understand. I mean the reprise would be really nice to have in clean stereo quality (like Circle of Life) but I doubt that they would re-release the Lion King or any of these collections again...maybe if they do the sequels it could happen, but I doubt it because Be Prepared has nothing to do with the sequels. Unsettling that The Lion in the Moon didn't make it to this release, I'd love to hear it. Then again, it probably was a poor song, because it was ultimately cut from the film.

Sadly, the film makers didn't make it that easy: while the interlude is from the demo, the chorus is placed over it so I'd still need to use film rip if I were to make a film version of that cue.

But as for the overall mix, I prefer the sessions version for both of those tracks. The new dynamic mix makes these tracks sound like they are new recordings and a new arrangement.

It does, almost, sound like a new recording, and I like that. But given how orchestra works, I bet they simply chose different takes. I notice that a previous criticism of this score has been that the brass sounds like "toys", yet here it definitely sounds more real. As for the choral work... well, I'd suspect that a lot of the ditched chorus work was in fact reworked for the musical.

Think of it this way: the film and original soundtrack, and by extension the sessions leak, present a prototype mix.

I actually prefer this mix, but as I always do, I'm editing this set to better fit my tastes (not least because the track titles they chose are godawful). I'm including some of the sessions cues on Disc 2 and the original OST (minus Elton John's songs) on disc 3 which should cover the most substantial differences between the album and this release).

I can say what my least favorite is so far: Kings of the Past. Don't like the way the strings fade in a little bit too obviously at 0:16 and how the strings take over at 0:49 so much that you can barely hear the flute.

After listening to TLK Legacy Collection, I had a great time listening to one of Hans Zimmer's most epic masterpiece of the 20th century (Point of No Return, Drop Zone, and The Rock are among the few...). That one exceptional track that separates the Legacy and the Complete Sessions apart is the film version of "Hakuna Matata". Not only that I was completely stunned, but laughed at the same time. I mean hell... it's not even an Intrada release. Overall, I have to give this Legacy Collection of The Lion King a final A+ !

Why shouldn't they?! Not only (IMO) is this Hans Zimmer's best score, but its the first time the Disney has released a Complete (or so we think) score by through their own record label! In the past, if we got a complete score for a Disney film, it was either a bootleg/recording sessions/complete score leak or they released it through another label (EX. Intrada and The Black Cauldron score).

Then why did they even release it? If it's Walt Disney Records, why would Intrada then rerelease it? Was it expanded?

They released it on a Physical CD. Where as before, the OST to Up was Digital Only. They did the same for Toy Story 3. It was originally Digital Only, then released it on CD through Intrada. Basically their deal with Intrada involves releasing physical CD's of soundtracks that Disney plans to release as Digital Only.

Exactly. All of the expanded versions of Up are edits of the OST, the Cast & Crew disc and maybe the FYC promo.

Intrada also occasionally does complete or near complete releases for Disney films that didn't initially have score albums at all. Tinker Bell for example only had a "music from and inspired by" type album until Intrada put out a complete edition in 2013.

I might buy a second copy and keep it in its shrink wrap. I might do this for the rest of the Legacy Collection releases as well. IDK. Depends on how much cash I have at the time. I know for sure I will do it for the Legacy Collection release of Toy Story next year!

how many other legacy collection are there being?

perhaps disney seeing frozen ost deluxe did very well with almost all score (and many demo), and deciding release for more :)

also, we should noting that this happens after lion king sessions leaked from scorepranos... leaks meaning not necessarily no complete release :)

how many other legacy collection are there being?

Here's the official list...

The 2014 release schedule for Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection follows:
• The Lion King, June 24, 2014
• Mary Poppins, August 26, 2014
• Sleeping Beauty, October 7, 2014
• The Little Mermaid, November 17, 2014

The 2015 release schedule for Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection follows:
• Fantasia, January 3, 2015
• Pinocchio, February 3, 2015
• Toy Story, March 17, 2015
• Disneyland, April 7, 2015
• Lady and the Tramp, May 12, 2015
• Pocahontas, June 23, 2015
• The Aristocats, August 14, 2015
• Cinderella, August 14, 2015

Right now, they've only planned up to 2015. But I have a feeling if this collection gets popular and makes enough money, they'll continue...

Evidently, The Black Hole was INDEED the complete score. Like Zimmer, this is truly one of my favorite scores that John Barry have ever composed. Each and every track was exactly ported from the original film release back in 1979... and added a rare closing on the final track. Creepy... but enjoyable.

I've already done an edit :D I'm using the Legacy Collection tracks for disc 1, including some of the sessions cues as "1994 mixes" on disc 2 and the rest of the 1994 mix of the score is represented by my including the original album's contents on disc 3, alngside the instrumentals and bonus tracks (in other words, mine's based on the way LLL would have done it, aside from splitting the songs from the cues).

Here's a breakdown of why it's that way:

Zimmer recorded the demo cues first. Then Zimmer and conductor Nick Glennie-Smith recorded eveyrthing with the live orchestra. For some reason, the directors and producers preferred to mix the two, which results in the mix we've heard for the past twenty years - as it appears on the OST, in the film and on the previous leaks. This uses the live recordings solely for Zimmer's cues, so I treat it as Zimmer's original intentions for the score.

I won't be publicly sharing this edit, mind: I want this release to do well.

People moaning about something they're getting for free again? It's ridiculously easy to convert FLAC to MP3 or WAV (seeing as it is a lossless format) and really, if people can't be bothered to do that or are moaning about the file size involved, then all they have to do is go elsewhere for it - i.e. iTunes or Amazon (and pay for it).

I never stated why it was frustating in the first place. Amazon.de screwed up this time big with the CD-orders for many people and the orders are still in limbo as far as I read the savannah-tlk community postings. I'm not keen to download the album because it's one of my favourites and I would like to enjoy it when it arrives on the doorstep. On the other hand, I still use a cheap and old flatrate internet connection and really wanted to check in in some of the demo recordings for now. Well, I guess YT will manage it for now. :/

Downloading flac is a Hell for me. I 700mb to be downloaded in 15 hours. I can easily convert to whatever I want. Mainly mp3, so I can hear the music in my pen.
Ok, it is hard for some people in the world, like me, with low connection and downloading 700mb is a hell to download it full, when sometimes the connection might cut off, and then, there we go again try to download it. This part I can understand. But complain and not just ask "can someone share mp3 please?" I am sure some people here are not that ASS of a person to not do it.
As I am doing now:

Mirror (for those who prefer mp3)
Mp3 VBR -V0 ([Only registered and activated users can see links]!TIwzSKQQ!0osS8vG-DrjJTRSNaoZt7ql7lq4NdCtbhR5D7ur_Ji0)

But, it's easy to convert flac if you people can take some moment to do something called "Research", and nowadays its a flooded information.

Hell. I can even give you guys what use to convert flac:

dbpoweramp music converter r12.3 [ all plugins ] ([Only registered and activated users can see links]!CJYyCB5K!SXLPZqo8Pp6LxxnEoIeCnyCd0L21fcMngVEebrU p9Zk)

Yeah, if everyone could give also links for mp3 vbr -v0, I would get that one instead. But I don't go around complain or even ask to do it, because I can do it by myself. I just have to wait a day to download the full thing, but it's better then nothing. That is where we Thank for the effort of offering something like this to everyone. I prefer to be thankful to the users who share things like this, then to complain about the file encoding. Its his decision to what he shares, and therefore, we have no right of complaining or make a french revolution out of it.

Now, about the album:
Gorgeously Gorgeous. :D
Best Zimmer soundtrack ever, but may be due to everyone's childhood and who this movie marked, perhaps a growing youth.
Oh damn... the "Stampede" track!!!! how I still today love that track!!!
Finally. please, disney continue doing things like this. Because it is well worth it.
I so hope I can manage to get a copy for myself.

long years ago, maybe in 1995, there was collection disney made in my country with books resuming the plots of their movies, and all came along with an audio tape, with a narrator and with many parts of the movies audible there, including the songs. Lion King was the first book.. and I heard that tape so damn much times.. and I still have it. :)
Hearing that audio tape, was the closest I could get of hearing the movie soundtrack, even with narrator talking.... oh damn... now I feel nostalgic. :)

It's not a bad rip. It sounds like an orchestra player turning a page. This gets into all recordings and given the enhancements this score has, these little quirks are quite likely to surface more than they did with the Rifkin mixes. It's a nice reminder that this version isn't as synthetic as the previous versions.

Well,
if it's in the actual recording, than to me it does sound more like key noises from the woodwinds.
Not a big deal though, as things like that are part of any live performances and the orchestral noise floor.

I know this will sound redundant seeing as I shared this lovely album, but I would suggest buying this as well. I just wish we could have finally gotten the full length versions of the Overture, One Man Band and Let's Go Fly A Kite. The fact that the soundtrack is confined to the first disc means that none of the tracks will be expanded from the last release because they can't fit any more music on a single disc. And those three tracks are only the ones that I know off the top of my head are incomplete, could be more. I'd much rather have absolutely all of the music from the actual film than have stuff like the Lost Chords recordings.

Ah well, can't complain too much. This Lion King disc couldn't be topped.

They can put the full length versions of the Overture, One Man Band, and Let's Go Fly a Kite. Other soundtracks have had more tracks and a longer running time than the previously released Mary Poppins soundtrack. So It's possible. I'm not sure why they would release this Legacy Collection edition if they didn't add the full length versions. Because everything on this set is available on other releases.

Just for fun, I repeated the OST's edits with this material (reaching roughly 20 minutes of score). And you know what? It makes them sound a damn sight better. "...To Die For" was, for me, the worst-edited track on the OST, yet with the new source it actually sounds pretty well put-together.

Other soundtracks have had more tracks and a longer running time than the previously released Mary Poppins soundtrack.

I sure hope you're right. My current Mary Poppins disc 1 comes to 1:19:37 according to iTunes. I was under the impression that a CDs max capacity was 1:20:00.

According to the official tracklist, we might get the full Overture! On Disc 2, it says there is a bonus track, and its "Overture [Album Version]". So I'm guessing the Overture on Disc 1 will be the full version.

I created a discussion thread for The Legacy Collection. Let's talk about other releases there and keep this thread solely related to The Lion King. :) Hope you guys will join in the discussion over there!

Could you please post a track listing? I want to compare it with my edit. Somehow I ended up with 70 tracks, TRT: 4:08:03. :P Thanks in advance.

Gee whizz, this album got the full brickwall treatment. I just saw a milk carton with is message: Zimmer's famous Reverbed brass practically missing. If anyone knows the whereabouts of his famous reverbed brass, please contact ffshrine.org.

I love the added layers and the focus on the choirs, but man, ELEPHANT GRAVEYARD chase sequence totally lost it's magic, and the conclusion to RIGHTFUL KING is so full of mud and rumble, i thought I was playing an lp in my truck. I am so glad i have the boots to go back to for that signature Zimmer sound.

Took the survey...I can't believe "Hi-Fi system" (or even speakers) weren't included in the list of listening methods...Pah! what's the world coming to?

Most of my answers obviously put emphasis on the music as a preference, particularly the score which gets painfully overlooked on a lot of Disney movies.

Also, I know with web exclusive content, it doesn't stay there forever. Here's a download link to the video clip should it ever go offline:

It's satisfying to finally see a decent official release of this score, but there are at least two severe problems with this album.

1) As have already been pointed out by others, the prominent Zimmer trademark brass sound is systematically pushed far back in the background throughout the whole album and almost muted, even in parts where it was clearly supposed to be the leading instrument. Why?
2) The quality of the demos is utterly shit. This is a really really bad example of sample rate conversion gone wrong, or more so lack of. I guess the source was 48 KHz and they reduced it to 44.1 KHz (which is used on CD) without using a downsampling/upsampling filter. If you try resizing an image without a proper scaling filter to smoothen things out it looks heavily pixelated. It's the same with audio, the result will sound like the demos. How the audio engineers could allow this to happen is beyond me. It's a mistake you simply don't do, and releasing it on album in this form is totally unacceptable.

But thanks for the upload!

1) As have already been pointed out by others, the prominent Zimmer trademark brass sound is systematically pushed far back in the background throughout the whole album and almost muted, even in parts where it was clearly supposed to be the leading instrument. Why?

That'd be because the mix done in 1994 was done by Jay Rifkin. He shared your views, so he rendered the brass from the demos separately and overlaid them on the recorded cues: that brass from 1994 is fake. The mellower-sounding natural brass is what was recorded by the orchestra.

The Rifkin mix is still out there, if you prefer it.

These aren't first-generation demos. Zimmer destroyed all of his demos after the score was completed. They had to be found on a second-hand tape and then transferred, and the tape wasn't exactly in the best of conditions.

That would be why there is no version of "Be Prepared Reprise" on this set, and probably why the film version of track 2 isn't here either (I suspect now that it was a demo)

And thanks!

no booklet. Putting it into a scanner seems likely to damage the spine and thus far no one wants to do that.

If we all bought it there would be no reason to have a booklet.

I won't be publicly sharing this edit, mind: I want this release to do well.

Here's an idea: why don't you post only the extra cues (not included in the CD)? That way anyone who wants your edit will have to download both files. Please consider this and thanks in advance.

He basically did that already. He posted the album edits he re-created a couple pages back. The few other tracks you need can be obtained off the complete score bootleg and the Rhythm of the Pride Lands album, both of which are easily obtained.

Got this album on the day it came out. This is my attempt to scan the booklet.
Lion King Legacy Booklet ([Only registered and activated users can see links])

Also, did anyone notice how the audio "peaks" rather heavily in almost every single track in CD1?

I have something for you guys.

This is Mufasa's Dead. Except, it's the alternate version that we've all heard of. It's not the original as such: I edited in the alternate section from the bootleg into the Legacy cue. This version of the cue is known as the "JK Version" while the film version of the cue is known as the "RR Version", though I have no idea what either actually mean.

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

I could share the original as well, but there's not much point: it was pretty much unfinished and the chase section is identical to the RR Version.

Nice to see someone scanned the pages! I wasn't willing to ruin the spine...plus I don't have a scanner. :P

And I didn't think the peaking was that bad. Noticeable, but didn't distract much at all.

I went and dug out the score for this cue and scanned the first few pages here:
Lion King 5m11 5 pages ([Only registered and activated users can see links])

Very interesting how starting from bar 13 the score switched to some sort of typeset -- it looks to be an insert added some time later.
The typeset itself is the "RR Version", but you can see hints of the "JK Version" in bar 12...
Although the score doesn't provide any extra info regarding what RR or JK means, we can infer that the "JK Version" is the earlier version of the cue, and was replaced by an edit - the "RR Version".

Ooh, you have the sheet music? Anything else interesting in there? Perhaps the alternate (film version) 1M2 that's not on this set? I received a cue list a while back and it did list a few interesting alternates and cues that probably didn't even make it past demo stage.

The two versions of the 1M2 cue looks to be the same in terms of musical ideas, they are just slightly different in orchestration/instrumentation.
Anything else interesting? The cue names are so different than what I've been seeing online, Mufasa's Death == Stampede Pt. 2 for example.
What does your cue list say?

This is a list I compiled:
1M1 - Circle of Life
1M1#2 - Circle of Life Alt.
1M2
1M2#2 Alt.
1M3/2M3 - This Land
1M3/2M3 - Insert.
2M4
3M5 - I Just Can't Wait to be King
3M6 - Graveyard
3M7
4M9A - Be Prepared
4M9A#2 - Be Prepared Alt.
4M9B
5M10 - Stampede
5M10#2 - Stampede Alt.
5M11 - Stampede Pt. 2
5M11#2 - Stampede Pt. 2 Alt.
5M12
6M13 - Hakuna Matata
6M13#2 - Hakuna Matata Alt.
6M14
6M15A - Under the Stars
6M15B
7M17
7M18 - Can You Feel the Love Tonight
7M19
9M20
9M20 Insert
9M22

There're also some sketches
3M8
4M9A - Thanks to Me
6M13 - Warthog Rhaposdy
6M14 - Be Prepared Re.
6M16

Oh... Could you possibly post all the sheet music?

Currently I have none of it scanned; I'll probably do it in the future when I have the time.

Taking a look, it was actually "6M13#3": it just wasn't listed as a sketch. So your list is pretty much the same.

I'd be highly interested in seeing those five sketches, especially seeing as we can't seem to correlate where 3M8 and 6M16 were to go.

I see. The only reason why I listed a few of those cues as sketches is because they're literally sketches... no orchestration of any sort -- just a three to four part reduction. I can scan those sketches for you when I get the score again.

Seems odd Be Prepared Reprise is only a sketch when the instrumental in the workprint versions of the film sounds pretty complete. Then again, maybe it's like the recording - the orchestrated version is lost.
